Privacy Policy

Effective date: September 20, 2026

WorldVote (“WorldVote”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) is a public, satirical platform where users can propose alternative names for geographic places, vote on proposals, view public proposal history, and participate in community moderation.

WorldVote does not change official geographic names.

1. Information we collect

Account information

When you create an account with email and password, we process information needed to create and authenticate your account, including your email address and authentication identifiers.

When you sign in with Google, Google and Supabase provide authentication information associated with your Google account. Depending on what Google provides, this may include your email address, name, profile image, and provider identifier.

WorldVote does not receive or store your Google password.

You may choose a public WorldVote username. Your username is separate from your email address and may appear beside proposals you submit.

Public contributions

When you use WorldVote, we may store information including:

  • rename proposals;
  • proposal reasons or descriptions;
  • votes;
  • proposal status and voting history;
  • approved and previous WorldVote names;
  • reports submitted about proposals; and
  • moderation-related records.

Proposal names, proposal reasons, proposal author usernames, proposal status, aggregate voting results, rename history, and approved WorldVote names may be publicly visible.

Individual users’ raw voting records are not intended to be publicly displayed. Aggregate voting totals are public.

Reports and private moderation information are not publicly visible.

Technical and session information

WorldVote uses authentication cookies and similar technical mechanisms necessary to keep users signed in and protect accounts.

Our infrastructure providers may automatically process technical information such as:

  • IP address;
  • browser and device information;
  • request timestamps;
  • authentication events;
  • security logs; and
  • diagnostic information.

WorldVote does not currently use third-party advertising trackers or behavioral advertising cookies.

2. How we use information

We use information to:

  • create and maintain user accounts;
  • authenticate users;
  • allow users to submit proposals and votes;
  • display public WorldVote activity and history;
  • calculate voting thresholds and proposal outcomes;
  • prevent duplicate actions, spam, fraud, and abuse;
  • enforce rate limits;
  • receive and review reports;
  • moderate proposals and users;
  • send account confirmation and password-recovery emails;
  • provide maps and geographic search;
  • maintain security and diagnose technical problems;
  • comply with legal obligations; and
  • operate and improve WorldVote.

3. Public information

WorldVote is designed around a public record of naming proposals and voting outcomes.

Information intended to remain public may include:

  • public proposal-author usernames;
  • proposed names;
  • proposal reasons;
  • official geographic names used for reference;
  • WorldVote-approved names;
  • proposal status;
  • aggregate voting totals;
  • voting thresholds;
  • rename rounds;
  • proposal deadlines;
  • approval and expiration history; and
  • historical WorldVote names.

Closing or deleting an account does not necessarily require deletion of public proposal history.

Where reasonably necessary to preserve the integrity and continuity of the public record, WorldVote may retain public contributions in an anonymized, de-identified, or account-disassociated form.

4. Service providers

WorldVote uses third-party providers to operate the service.

Supabase

Supabase provides authentication, database, security, and related backend services.

Google

Google provides optional Google account authentication.

Mapbox

Mapbox provides maps, geographic data, map rendering, and geographic search functionality.

Brevo

Brevo may be used to deliver transactional emails such as account confirmation and password-recovery messages.

Vercel

Vercel hosts and delivers the WorldVote website and may process technical request and diagnostic information.

These providers may process information according to their own privacy policies and contractual obligations. Their infrastructure may process information in countries other than the country where you live.

5. Cookies and authentication

WorldVote uses cookies and similar browser storage where necessary for:

  • authentication;
  • session management;
  • security; and
  • core application functionality.

These are primarily functional and security-related.

WorldVote does not currently use cookies for behavioral advertising.

6. Moderation and security

WorldVote uses automated and administrative controls to protect the service.

These may include:

  • rate limits;
  • duplicate-action prevention;
  • spam validation;
  • account restrictions;
  • proposal reports;
  • moderation review;
  • proposal hiding or removal; and
  • user suspension.

Moderation reports and internal moderation information are not part of the public WorldVote record.

7. Data retention

Account information may be retained while your account remains active and for a reasonable period afterward where necessary for security, fraud prevention, legal obligations, dispute resolution, or service integrity.

Public WorldVote proposal and voting history may be retained for longer because preserving historical naming rounds and voting outcomes is part of the purpose of the service.

Moderation and security records may be retained where reasonably necessary to prevent abuse or document administrative actions.

Third-party service providers may retain logs according to their own retention policies.

8. Account and data requests

Depending on where you live, you may have rights relating to your personal information, including rights to:

  • request access;
  • request correction;
  • request deletion;
  • object to or restrict certain processing; or
  • request information about how your data is used.

Privacy or account-data requests may be submitted using the contact method published on worldvote.org.

We may need to verify your identity before completing certain requests.

Deletion requests do not necessarily require removal of public, historical WorldVote records where those records can reasonably be retained without identifying you.

The in-product Delete Account control removes the Supabase Auth user, login sessions, profile, public username, and private operational account state. Public proposals, aggregate vote totals, proposal status history, and approved or previous WorldVote names remain as account-disassociated historical records.

WorldVote may retain a restricted verified-email integrity record where reasonably necessary to prevent duplicate voter identities, fraud, or account-deletion abuse. This record is not public.

9. Security

WorldVote uses reasonable technical and organizational safeguards intended to protect user information.

However, no internet service, database, or authentication system can guarantee absolute security.

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials.

10. Children

WorldVote is not intended for children under 16.

If we learn that personal information has been collected from a child below the applicable minimum age without appropriate authorization, we may delete or restrict the account and associated personal information.

11. International users

WorldVote is available through the internet and may be accessed from multiple countries.

Your information may therefore be processed in jurisdictions whose privacy laws differ from those where you live.

Where applicable law provides you with additional privacy rights, you may use the contact method published on worldvote.org to exercise them.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as WorldVote changes.

Material changes will be reflected by updating the effective date and, where appropriate, providing additional notice.

13. Contact

Questions or requests about privacy may be submitted through the contact method published on worldvote.org.
